How to Photograph the Northern Lights?

The people of Húsavík are quite used to seeing the sky light up in green at night, and this is the reason many people visit our town during the winter months. Due to a huge solar flare two nights ago, a large part of the northern hemisphere now has a chance to enjoy this spectacle tonight on Halloween.

Here are a few tips from Icelandic photographers on how to best capture the show.

  • Set your aperture to the widest your lens offers (f/1.4, f/1.8 or f/2.8) and adjust the ISO setting to either at least 1600.
  • Set your  shutter speed to somewhere between 1 to 30 seconds and adjust your white balance to 3500 kelvin.

For the best result, it is good to set the focus to infinity or to focus on a distant object. Finally, to avoid shaking, set a shutter delay of 1 or 2 seconds. Enjoy the show tonight. We look forward to seeing your photos tomorrow.

Did you see the Northern Lights on Oscar Night?

The song Húsavík my hometown was the highlight of Oscar Night for many. Swedish singer Molly Sandén was accompanied by 17 girls from the local children’s choir for her performance at the Húsavík harbor.

The team of Húsavík Cape Hotel was heavily involved in the production, with our manager Orly as the local producer of the performance and Leonardo working on documenting the whole thing behind the scenes. On the Oscar stage, you may also have noticed the piano from Cape Hotel’s bar Jaja Ding Dong, that previous claim to fame was being used to compose one of Iceland’s Eurovision entries. And on the piano was our very own Rafnar, a longtime member of our team, now living in Reykjavík.

All the elements were in place for this performance and to our team’s much enjoyment, even the Northern Lights showed up. What a magical night, one that we will never forget.

Even though our hometown song did not take home the golden statuette, we are grateful and proud to have been able to show the whole world our tiny little town.

Húsavík Cover Song Contest

Welcome to Húsavík, our hometown. The place where the mountains sing through the screams of seagulls, and where the whales can live ’cause (we) are gentle people.

Like the rest of the world, we have seen Netflix’s new film Eurovision Song Contest: The story of Fire Saga and we just love it. We haven’t laughed so hard in… ever I guess. We are also proud to tell you that two of our Cape Hotel family members have small roles as extras in the film. They’ll for sure tell you all about it next time you come to stay.

We feel so grateful to Netflix and the cast and crew for this film and for the beautiful song about our small town. Now we want to give back.
